If you have read my article on flexion distraction, you would have become familiar with the term “traction” and all that it entails. If you would like a better understanding on traction, I would recommend to read my post on flexion distraction which might help clarify any confusion around why traction is important for certain painful conditions.
Have you experienced persistent neck pain that may be lingering around and not completely going away, no matter how much you have tried? Adding cervical traction to your treatments might just be the tool you need!
Cervical traction works similar to flexion distraction in that it is a manual technique that chiropractors and other practitioners make use of, by gently and safely providing a traction force to the cervical spine or “neck”. Commonly done with a towel, Y strap or a machine. The traction aids in separation of the joints within the neck. This corrects any joint or menisci impingements, decreases compressions forces placed on the discs, allows hydration of the disc, decreases pressure placed on any compressed or irritated nerves and stretches the joint capsule, surrounding muscles, tendons and ligaments. Together the combined mechanism above decrease pain, inflammation and nerve irritation associated with painful neck conditions as well as creates better mind and body awareness.
Cervical traction is commonly used to treat conditions such as headaches, disc herniations, thoracic outlet syndrome and joint related impingements. I place emphasis on only allowing this technique to be conducted by a professional. It is safe and effective if done in the correct manner. Cervical traction is commonly used in combination with other techniques as well as an adjustment to yield the best results.
