Dry Needling in Johannesburg
Roodepoort and Sandton
If you are dealing muscle knots or spasms, or pain that keeps coming back, dry needling may be an effective part of your treatment plan.
At BTM Chiropractic, we provide dry needling in Johannesburg from our Sandton and Roodepoort practices.
It is commonly used for neck pain, back pain, tension headaches, muscle knots, and recurring tightness where muscle
irritation is contributing to the problem. Many patients explore dry needling after trying stretching, massage, or rest without lasting relief.
When tension continues to return, it often indicates that the muscle requires more targeted treatment and that the underlying movement patterns need to be properly assessed.
UNDERSTANDING YOUR CARE
What is Dry Needling
Dry needling is a clinical treatment that uses a very fine, sterile needle to target trigger points within tight or irritated muscle tissue.
These trigger points are areas of increased tension within the muscle that can cause local discomfort, referred pain, stiffness, and reduced movement. By placing the needle directly into these points, the treatment stimulates a response in both the muscle and nervous system.
It is called dry needling because no medication is injected. The effect comes from the mechanical and neurological response to the needle itself.
When performed correctly, dry needling can help release muscle tension, improve blood flow, reduce pain sensitivity, and restore more normal muscle function. It may also create a brief twitch response in the muscle, which is often a sign that the targeted area has been effectively engaged.
Dry needling is most effective when used as part of a broader treatment plan that also addresses movement patterns, joint function, and the underlying cause of the muscle irritation.

- Muscle tightness continues to return despite stretching or rest

- Trigger points are referring pain into another area
- Movement is restricted due to muscle guarding or protective tension
- Desk work, training load, or repetitive movement patterns are contributing to ongoing strain

Dry Needling vs Acupuncture
Dry needling and acupuncture both use fine needles, but they are based on different treatment approaches.
Dry needling is grounded in modern clinical practice and focuses on trigger points, muscle tension, and movement related pain. The goal is to release tight muscles, reduce pain, and restore normal function.
Acupuncture is based on a traditional treatment model and follows a different framework for assessing and treating the body.
For patients seeking relief from muscle pain, trigger points, sports related tension, or tightness linked to movement, dry needling is often the more relevant and targeted treatment option.
Dry Needling FAQ
ou may feel brief discomfort when a tight trigger point is reached, but this sensation usually lasts only a few seconds. Most patients tolerate the treatment well.
The most common effects are short term soreness, mild bruising, or tenderness in the treated area. These typically settle within a day or two.
It is best to avoid heavy training or loading of the treated area for the rest of the day, unless your chiropractor advises otherwise. Light movement and staying hydrated can support recovery.
Some patients experience relief soon after treatment, while others notice gradual improvement over a short course of care. Results depend on the condition, its severity, and how long the muscle has been affected.
